This is a small black paper album containing 12 pages; pp. 1 and 11-12 are empty. Most pages are occupied by a single print. Mary McBride has inserted descriptions of some of the photos, written on the backs of business cards from her brothers Thornton and Werner. When she ran out of cards she wrote directly on the photos. Her descriptions are transcribed in italics.
The photos in this album seem to come from a later visit to Missouri than those in Album V.B, probably in the early 1930s. The old house has been repaired and added to; the barn has been replaced; and the camera itself produces larger and sharper prints. On the backs of pp. 9 and 10, prints from the earlier visit have been pasted in.
[V.F.02r]
This is the lane looking toward Versailles as you come from the direction of the Mill & Creek. "Val de Molin": name of dear Mother's home where 150 slaves lived died and are buried. This was one of 3 large plantations owned by her father Wm Humes.
[I believe that Mary is wrong about the direction: I think the camera is facing west from the Versailles road along the farm lane, not north along the Versailles road. PAB]
[V.F.03r]
[The right wing, with the old stone chimney, is the original house; the left wing had been added since the earlier visit. PAB]
[V.F.04r]
Another view of the back yard.
[V.F.05r]
View of a new house built where "nigger" cabins stood.
[I.e. the new addition on the back of the old house. PAB]
[V.F.06r]
[V.F.07r]
Back view of the new modern home.
[V.F.08r]
One of many fire places - all of black walnut - showing the brass andirons left there by Mother.
[V.F.09r]
We crossed the creek here going to the mill & to Uncle Tom's and the Woolen factory.
[V.F.09v]
Old stone burrs that ground the flour and corn meal. Thornt took this picture outside where they lay near the mill.
[This description is written on a campaign card for the election of F.G. Sutherlin as City Commissioner in the election of 9 March 1937. PAB]
[V.F.10r]
Old Grist Mill near where Uncle Joe lived on the hill above.

[V.F.10va1]
Uncle Ed's home at the factory. [This is an error. Comparison with pictures in Album V.B shows that this is Val de Moulin. PAB] |
