With all the buzz about out-of-copyright books being downloadable from Google Books, I thought I’d take a look. Google links to 10 books in their announcement. Of these, half give me a pdf download link; four others give me the record but no text or download link, and one link is broken. Groklaw summed up Google’s copyright policy as requiring out-of-copyright authors to be “Shakespeare dead”; but in Canada apparently Shakespeare still ain’t dead enough, nor is Aesop, though Hugo, Dunant, Bolivar and Dante are. Pity.
